The Master Gardener Program of Allegany County began in 2006. Since that time, 45 individual have completed the program and 12 are certified Master Gardeners. These individuals have volunteered their time to:
- Construct a demonstration garden located at the Allegany County Extension Office. The demonstration garden is a combination of ornamental plants and vegetables. In 2007 vegetables include tomatoes, rhubarb, onions, peppers, green beans, and sweet corn. An early crop of strawberries also added to the scheme. Ornamental plants include a climbing rose, lambs ear, coleus, lilac, coneflower, petunia, and heirloom chrysanthemums for fall color.
- Man an educational booth at the Allegany County Fair and Ag Expo.
- Participate in various gardening workshops
- Operate plant clinics
