MG History - Washington County

Date program began: September 7, 2005

Description of initial program

20 local residents were part of the first Master Gardener program in Washington County in 2005.  Fifteen were students in the first training classes and five transferred from the Frederick County program.

In its first year, the program launched 5 demonstration garden projects including:  two gardens at local schools through the C-safe after-school program, a memorial garden restoration at Hagerstown Community College, a pumpkin patch at a local church and an historic 4-square garden in partnership with the Rural Heritage Museum.

In addition, Master Gardeners developed educational displays at several community events. Two volunteers joined the Extension Advisory Council.   Four guest speakers offered continuing education programs at monthly meetings.

Highlights of current program: (Spring 2008)

34 Master Gardeners currently volunteer their time and talents in Washington County.

Teaching gardens have expanded to include 4 additional school gardens and a therapeutic garden at a local long-term care facility. Plant clinics are now held twice a month at a local farmers market and in conjunction with informational displays at 3 major community events. Other new projects include an annual plant sale and a speakers bureau. Master Gardeners are also planning a new native plants garden at a local college and an on-site demonstration garden at the Extension offices.

Advanced training sessions have included classes on tree identification and Bay-Wise landscape management. 8 Master Gardeners completed Bay-Wise training and 6 of their gardens are now certified as BayWise. Four continuing education programs are offered at monthly meetings in addition to three hands-on training sessions for plant clinic volunteers.
