Master Gardeners, as advocates of a greener and healthier environment, engage in multiple activities throughout the community.
Below, in alphabetical order, are brief descriptions of our activities.
Ask a Master Gardener is a program to provide information to home gardeners at county libraries.
Educates residents about simple choices people can make in their landscapes and homes that can directly affect the health of Chesapeake Bay.
Raises awareness of invasive plant species and the need to control them before they crowd out the native species that wildlife depends on. We work to restore wildlife habitat by removing invasive plant species and planting native shrubs and trees in the Middle Patuxent Environmental Area.
Provide education about backyard composting at demonstration sites in the County and distribute FREE composting bins to County residents. We also speak to interested groups about composting
Exhibit Committee
Create exhibits as requested, ongoing throughout the year
The Green School Committee assists Howard County schools in becoming Maryland Green School certified.
Provide information and demonstrations to folks interested in their own food production such a vegetable gardening and small fruit production. Special programs are being developed for elementary and middle school class students.
Howard County Conservancy at Mt. Pleasant
The Conservancy is an environmental education center which has a wide variety of activities for adults and children.

Volunteers help keep the information on the site updated.
MG Training Interviewing
Inform and interview prospective candidates for the Master Gardener Program.
Master Gardener Volunteer Mentor
Work in teams to help new MG class become comfortable in Master Gardener program. As an enthusiastic particpant in MG activities a mentor helps to educate and engage new MGs in the many volunteer opportunities in the program.
The Looseleaf is published year-round. All Master Gardeners are encouraged to submit articles, news items, photographs, book reviews, recipes, etc.
Coordinates presentations on gardening and the environment for the public. Speaks at libraries, garden clubs, village centers or other venues.
Public Information
Help generate press releases for education programs and other activities. Also design fliers and post on community bulletin boards.
Do you want leaves for your compost piles or gardens? Do you have extra leaves, bagged and ready to go that you just don't need or have room for anymore? The Rake and Take Program will assist in finding those that want leaves with those that have leaves (open to public participation).Annually, 5th grade students from the public school system participate in environmental activities that protect Howard County and Maryland streams and reivers which flow into the Chesapeake Bay.
The Youth Education committee provides outreach to the youth in our county on various topics related to gardening, the environment, native plants and more.
Established in 1855, Whipps Cemetery is a one acre garden/park at 3651 St. John's Lane, just South of the Frederick Road and St. John's Lane intersection. Howard County Master Gardeners maintain the property.
