Bay-Wise Landscaping
Educating residents about landscape practices that protect the Chesapeake Bay and local environments
By changing a few simple practices, together we can help keep our Maryland water healthy.
Master Gardeners support and recommend Bay-Wise Gardening principles through the following activities:
On-Site Consultation
Bay-Wise teams come to homes to consult on ways to improve landscapes that help the environment with the expectation of saving time and money.
Bay-Wise Certification
Bay-Wise teams come to homes and evaluate landscaping practices against the Yardstick. Certification is given where homes meet a threshold of good Bay-Wise practices.
Evaluations are made using the following Yardsticks:
Storm Water Management
The Storm Water Management team focuses on educating the public about stormwater management in Howard County and its impact on the Chesapeake Bay. The issues may include, but are not limited to, stormwater runoff control, sedimentation of streams and lakes and pollution control of county waters.
Bay-Wise Community Education
Members of the Bay-Wise team conduct presentations and talks addressing Bay-Wise horticulture topics throughout the community.
County Library Displays
Team members develop graphic displays for library display on Bay-Wise topics
Howard Community College Gardens
Members of the Bay Wise team design and support the implementation of ecologically sound landscapes that will thrive in Maryland's climate and soil.
