The Prince George’s County Cooperative Extension has several demonstration gardens open to the public to see examples of flower, butterfly, herb, and vegetable gardens. If you’d like to see the gardens or if you have questions about any of the gardens, please contact Esther Mitchell. Butterfly Garden
Butterfly gardens are both beautiful and a great way to attract butterflies to your garden. Butterfly gardens aren’t just a means to attract butterflies, they promote butterfly conservation. A well designed butterfly garden should contain plants to both attract butterflies and support their caterpillars. Come to the Clinton butterfly garden to see examples of both. For more information on butterfly gardening, check out these great links.
Herb Garden
Have you ever tried fresh herbs in your cooking? Or dried herbs in potpourri? Herb gardens are very popular both in the city and the country because they can be as small as a pot in a window or as large as the garden can hold. Fresh herbs are a wonderful addition to the menu and bring aroma to the garden. Come to the Clinton herb garden to see some examples of herbs in the garden. For more information on herb gardening, see these links.
Vegetable Garden
Have you ever noticed that vegetables bought at a farm stand look and taste so much better than those found in the grocery store? Why not have that same great taste at your doorstep! Anyone can plant a vegetable garden. Vegetable gardening provides enjoyment from gardening and being outside, fresh vegetables, vegetables that may not be easily available otherwise, and can save money for the home grocery budget. Fresh vegetables have more nutrients and fewer chemicals because you amend the soil and know exactly what went into your garden. Come to the Clinton vegetable garden to see our vegetable garden. Demonstration Garden Projects Along with gardens, the demonstration gardens also have examples of garden projects. Stop by and see some of our projects. - Garden Table – A garden table is a raised planter that allows you to garden without bending over. These planters are excellent for people who have physical challenges but still wish to garden. They are also useful in locations which don’t have a garden area.
- Rain Barrel – Rain barrels are a great way to promote conservation by collecting rain water and reusing it in your garden.
Community Gardens PG Master Gardeners are involved in community gardens. - Master Peace Community Garden - Located at the newly remodeled Center for Educational Partnership next to William Wirt Middle School in Riverdale, the garden has space for families to have their own plots to grow healthy food, as well as a youth garden where students from the neighborhood can learn how to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. If you would like to get involved, please contact Vinnie Bevivino at either 301-314-2744 or bevivino@umd.edu
Other Gardens in P.G. - Riverdale Mansion - The gardens and adjacent orchard feature many flowers and herbs, as well as a variety of fruits and vegetables representative of the crops needed to support the large family, workers, and livestock living at Riversdale in the early 19th century. If you would like to get involved please email Sarah Urdaneta at sycamoreaz@yahoo.com.
