Grow It Eat It Planning Meeting
Tuesday, Oct. 13; 10am-2pm
Tuesday, Nov. 17; 10am-2pm
4H Center in College Park
We hope that all interested MG's will join us at this planning meeting. You don't need to RSVP, but if you could contact Robin Hessey (rmhessey@umd.edu; 410-531-1754) to let her know you are coming, it would be helpful. We will supply coffee and some light snacks. Please bring a bag lunch and a drink.
We have begun to establish a network of beginning and experienced food gardeners in order to create a million new food gardens in Maryland. Hundred's of MGs have been trained to teach the public how to food garden. We hope to present as many programs as we can throughout the state, and link all participants to a Grow It Eat It network.
To see some of what we've accomplished so far, visit the internal MG Grow it Eat It website.
The economy seems to have created a tremendous resurgence of folks who want to try and grow some of their own food. Who better than MG's to help folks plan and implement simple vegetable gardens all over the state. Our efforts have been recognized by the University of Maryland as one of Extension's signature programs.
Our demo gardens, salad gardens, container gardens, kitchen gardens, edible landscapes are all playing into this. One idea (among many) was working with scouts or other groups to do veggie gardening for soup kitchens. Words like "family sustainability" and "victory gardens" came to mind. This is a joint effort with HGIC is and Jon has initiated a beginning vegetable gardener blog.
Be sure to check out the public Grow It Eat It site that can be accessed off of the HGIC site or by going to this URL: http://www.growit.umd.edu/. This site is full of information about food gardening and has list MG classes on the subject.
